Belalp - Blatten - Winter fun in Valais

Aletsch Glacier - View from Belalp

Who wants to travel by public transport to the Swiss skiing region Belalp-Blatten can take the Matterhorn Gotthard train to Brig and afterwards go on with the post bus to Blatten. You will find attractive holiday flats and hotels on the Belalp as well as in Blatten. After having checked in at your desired hotel it is the right time for the piste!

Starting from the little village of Blatten it goes up to the Belalp. Various Belalp trains, i.e. ski lift, chair lift or through the ski tunnel Hohstock make a network of about sixty kilometres of pistes with snow guaranteed accessible to the tourists. All around four-thousand metre peaks of the Alps are looming up. Even in the summer the Belalp trains are open, however, they do not go as high as they do in the winter.

A specific sports event is the Belalp Witch. On this competition skiers and snowboarders show their athletic prowess in the snow. The fun is clearly the limelight as it can be easily seen from the fancy dresses during the traditional witch downhill run. Lots of witches bomb down the 12 kilometres of slope on this day.

Wonders of nature near Blatten and Belalp

The Great Aletsch Glacier with all its surroundings namely Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn is part of the UNESCO world heritage. It is shaped from about hardly imaginable 27 billion tons of ice. Who wants to have a closer look at the natural heritage has the opportunity to hike to the Oberaletsch hut (2,640 m). Not only since being named world natural heritage the Great Aletsch Glacier is an attraction of the Swiss Valais. Researchers have implemented gauging and research stations high up in the mountains, and aerial passenger tramways and railways such as the Jungfrau railway have been started up for the tourists.

Once upon a time the melted water from the Aletsch Glacier flew into the Massa. Over the millennia the river dug into the rocks deeper and deeper until a deep canyon developed. Nowadays the water from the Aletsch Glacier is collected; the Massa does not contain so much water anymore. A visit to the canyon means an athletic event for each climbing enthusiast. Together with qualified mountain guides the conquest of the Massa Canyon is started. However, this is not a walkover. The climbing adventure starts at the Gebidem dam through the bizarre world from stone. Followed from a climbing tour which includes climbing up rocks, crossing water basins and abseiling, this tour can only be handled in a safe way provided that an impeccable and appropriate equipment and a professional mountain guide is available.
