Zermatt is a popular holiday resort in the Swiss canton of Valais nearby the frontier to Italy. The ancient municipality is situated in the German speaking part of Switzerland and has a lot of rustically looking buildings from the 18th century, made of dark wood. Especially the centre of the resort still looks like an original Swiss mountain village. The buildings are quite large and have four storeys in average. Between this houses are romantically narrow streets with hairpin turns. These streets have not been built for car traffic and that's why Zermatt remained free of cars up to now.
