Location: Salzburg is the capital of the state Salzburg with the same name and is located at the Salzach. With its 150,000 inhabitants Salzburg is the fourth-largest town of Austria. There are several large mountains within Salzburg, such as the Kapuzinerberg, the Mönchsberg, the Rainberg and the Festungsberg (“Fortess Mountain“?). On the Festungsberg you can see the fortress Hohensalzburg, which is the largest completely preserved castle of the Middle Ages.
Tourism: The town Salzburg is globally known as the place of birth of Johann Amadeus Mozart. The castles have made their contribution to the degree of familiarity of Salzburg as well. The fortress Hohensalzburg is of the year 1077. The collegiate Saint Peter Church was built in the 12th century. The Franciscan Church was built already in the 8th century, and later completed by a Romanesque nave and a Gothic hall choir. Salzburg's cathedral (Dom) in Baroque style was newly built in 1611. Mozart's house of birth can be found in the Getreidegasse. You should absolutely visit the old part of Salzburg on foot.
Food and drink: “Nockerln“ or Kasnockerln“ are a well-known and popular meal. Moreover, we recommend freshwater fish, particularly trout. There are numerous fish meals prepared according to very different recipes.
Football: Salzburg belongs to the four Austrian towns where the matches of the European Championship 2008 will be held. In the Stadium Wals-Siezenheim three group matches of the Championship will be held. For the Championship 2008, the stadium will be extended from approx. 19,000 seats to more than 30,000 seats. It is planned to remove them again afterwards. The new stadium is the home stadium of Red Bull Salzburg.

How to get there: If you want to drive to Salzburg from Vienna take the A1, from Munich the A8 and from Villach the A10. It is recommendable as well to go by train. Important main routes are from Munich, Innsbruck, Villach and Vienna. You can also get to Salzburg by plane, the airport is called W. A. Mozart. In the public short-distance traffic the visitor can take the suburban train or the bus. There is a park-and-ride system available on the outskirts of town for visitors coming by car. The city of Salzburg can be easily reached by public means of transportation.
