Location: Klagenfurt is the capital of the southern province Carinthia. It has approx. 92,000 inhabitants. Klagenfurt is located at the eastern shores of the Lake Wörther. In the north, you can find the Gurktaler Alpen and in the south the Karawanken. Via the Loiblpaß you can get to Slovenia.

 

Tourism: Klagenfurt is a town that gives you a great sense of calm and where you can feel comfortable. All the beautiful castles, some of them which are still privately owned, and houses built in  Renaissance style round off the impression of a beautiful town. The famous landmark is a dragon with Hercules hewed in stone. A combination of neat, small coffee houses, beautiful places with splashing fountains and little alleyways. Klagenfurt has also a swimming area at the Lake Wörther. Enjoy a walk at the Lendkanal of the water connection between the city centre and the Lake Wörther.

 

Furthermore, there is the miniature park - Minimundus -, a national museum with exhibitions about archaeology, geology, botany etc. The mining museum with a tunnel of 500 metres length is interesting as well.

 

Food and drink: In the local cuisine, grain and milk products of any kind and meat are processed. Moreover, you can find fish of the Carinthian seas on the menu. Try the Carinthian specialities cheese noodles (Kasnudeln) or “Schlickkrapfen“ or the very different tasty stews.

 

Football: On the occasion of the Championship 2008, Klagenfurt with its Wörtherseestadion belongs to the four Austrian venues. Three group matches of the Championship are held in the Wörtherseestadion. The home stadium of the FC Kelag Kärnten, the second-league association, will be built at the Lake Wörther. It is planned that a sports park, a hotel and a shopping centre will belong to the football stadium as well. The Wörtherseestadion shall have 30,000 seats and its completion is planned for May 2007.

How to get there: The autobahn A2 runs past Klagenfurt in the western direction to Villach and Vienna, in eastern direction to Graz. Klagenfurt has an international airport as well. The flight connections of the Alpe-Adria-Airport lead to Vienna, Berlin, Hanover, Cologne, Frankfurt etc. In the town, the public traffic is handled by public service buses.
