Location: Bern is the capital of Switzerland and can be found in the canton of the same name. It has approx. 128,000 inhabitants. Bern is the headquarter of the Universal Postal Union and is located at the Aare River. Moreover, the old part of Bern is worth a visit.
Tourism: Arcades and numerous fountains in the old part of town form one of the most beautiful hearts of town. The Clock Tower, the western city gate, with moving figures has an ornate astronomical calendar clock of the 12th century, the second west city gate, the Prison Tower (Käfigturm) of the 13th century was used as a prison until 1897. Furthermore, there is the Kornhaus, the Town Palace (Stadtpalais), the Erlacherhof and the Gothic Town Hall. At the Bärengraben you can find a pen with heraldic animals of Bern and a zoo at the Aare River. By means of a funicular railway you can get to the Gurten, Bern's „house mountain“ from where you can enjoy a wonderful view on the town and the Bernese Oberland.
Food and drink: Bern has many guesthouses and restaurants where you can excellently enjoy your meal. Bernese Röschti or “fondue“ or the solid “Bernese Platter“ should be absolutely tried. Also a cheese cake or an onion tart or a cheese or meat fondue in funny company can taste well. We also recommend to enjoy your meal together with local wines.
Football: The traditional Wankdorf Stadium has been pulled down. It has been replaced by the new Stade de Suisse Wankdorf with 32,000 seats. The home stadium of the BSC Young Boys has a shopping centre, restaurants and office premises. Six games on the occasion of the European Championship 2008 will be held in the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf.
